WFP Responds To Flood Victims In Satkhira

DHAKA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), with funding from the Australian government through AusAID, is providing urgently needed emergency food assistance to 57,000 people affected by floods in Satkhira, sourthern Bangladesh.

”Thousands of poor families have been devastated due to the effects of the flooding. A vast number of ultra-poor people are stranded on embankments, with no access to food and shelter,” said acting WFP Country Director, Michael Dunford. “Satkhira is an area where malnutrition is endemic, so this food assistance is absolutely vital.”
Heavy rainfall in the southern districts during the past two weeks has caused severe flooding in the area. Vast areas of the Tala and Satkhira Sadar Upazila under Satkhira district have been submerged.
“The Australian government is committed to supporting the affected communities through WFP’s emergency relief operations”, said Dr. Justin Lee, Australia’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
WFP has allocated 34.5 metric tons of high energy biscuits to 11,500 households to cover the immediate needs of over 57,000 people in the two Upazilas of the district.
Each household will be provided with 40 packets of fortified biscuits, which will serve as a vital source of food and nutrition for the severely vulnerable people hit by the flooding.
Mr. Dunford thanked the Australian Government and said: “The assistance funded through AusAID has enabled WFP to respond quickly to provide assistance to these vulnerable families who are in urgent need of food. WFP will continue to monitor the situation and will extend this support if necessary.”
WFP, in collaboration with the Government and its local NGO partner, Shushilon, will organize the distributions and will be involved in the futher assessment and monitoring of the flood-affected communities.
AusAID assistance was also crucial in providing emergency food assistance to victims of recent flooding in the Chakoria upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
